Department of Geology and Geophysics, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, USA. For several decades hydrologists have recognized that stable isotope ratios of hydrogen and oxygen can be used to distinguish the origin of water in precipitation, surface and ground waters. By using stable isotopes, we can identify the precipitation contributions on the Navajo Nation from the Gulf of California and the Gulf of Mexico. Water of the first type originate in the main Guadalupe stream, which has a more depleted average δ18O isotope value (–7.8 ‰) than average local rainwater (–2.0 ‰). Our estimate of the SLV‐wide water isotope budget gives mean tap water isotope ratios of −121.3‰ and −16.1‰ (δ 2 H and δ 18 O) in spring 2013 and suggests a nearly monotonic increase for δ 2 H and an increasing trend with a superimposed seasonal oscillation for δ 18 O during the subsequent samplings (Figures 4b and 4c). To investigate the hydrology of Utah Lake, we analyzed the hydrogen (δ2H) and oxygen (δ18O) stable isotope composition of water samples collected from the various components of its system. The average δ2H and δ18O values of the inlets are similar to the average values of groundwater, which in turn has a composition that is similar to winter precipitation. This suggests
