Once you get stuck into it you hardly notice (on the e-version anyway, you might if you have a hardback) as Dostoyevsky weaves an incredible story led by an unbelievable cast of characters, all as vivid and larger than life as the next. The Idiot is a novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky that was first published in in 1869.

Half-sane Prince Myshkin returns from Swiss psycho-clinic to face the glamorous world of St Petersburg. The Idiot by Dostoevsky was my first run in with Dostoevsky and his works and it certainly won't be my last. I was interested by the complex messages that were in the book and reflecting upon it this question came to me. Is there a society that Myshkin could live in without being treated as an outcast such as he was throughout The Idiot?
